Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Criticises Ofcom for Giving Royal Mail a “Free Pass” on Second-Class Deliveries

Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, Tom Gordon, has strongly criticised communications regulator Ofcom for what he described as “letting Royal Mail off the hook.” His comments come after Ofcom announced on 10th July that it would allow Royal Mail to scrap Saturday second-class deliveries and reduce the frequency of deliveries during the week.

Gordon warned that the move would negatively impact residents across Harrogate and Knaresborough. Since Tom was elected, many people have contacted Tom about the delays they have experienced, and inconsistent postal service. Given those circumstances, he urged Ofcom to reconsider the decision and take meaningful action to hold Royal Mail accountable for its ongoing performance issues.

Tom Gordon said:

“This is a blow to people across Harrogate and Knaresborough. My constituents have made it very clear that they are fed up with delayed post, and now Ofcom seems to be accepting that status quo, giving Royal Mail permission to scale back even further. That’s simply unacceptable.

“Our local postal workers continue to go above and beyond, despite being let down by those in charge. Instead of excusing poor management, Ofcom should be stepping in and demanding better from Royal Mail’s leadership.

“Reducing the service is only normalising delays and tells residents they just have to put up with it. That’s not good enough—and I won’t stop fighting for a postal service that meets the expectations and needs of our community.”
