The Liberal Democrats have highlighted growing support for a UK-EU customs union after a Ten Minute Rule Bill passed in Parliament today.

The Bill, introduced by Liberal Democrat Europe Spokesperson Al Pinkerton, passed by a majority of 1 vote. The vote breakdown was 100 in favour, 100 against – with the Deputy Speaker casting the deciding vote in favour.

13 Labour backbenchers voted with the Liberal Democrats in favour of negotiating a customs union with the EU.

Although Ten Minute Rule Bills rarely become law, Tom said the result reflects increasing momentum for a closer trading relationship with Europe.

Commenting, Tom said:

“Today’s vote in favour of a UK-EU customs union shows there is real appetite in Parliament for a better deal with Europe."

“The Conservatives’ Brexit deal has left families and businesses worse off. A customs union with the EU is one of the most effective ways to turn this around – cutting costs, boosting growth, and bringing billions back into public services."

“The Prime Minister must drop his failed red lines and start working towards a serious trade agreement that delivers real economic growth.”
