Local MP calls for Compensation for Local Businesses, in light of Never-Ending Roadwork Disruptions

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has thrown his support behind an amendment to the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, that would ensure local businesses receiving financial compensation for a loss in trade due to roadworks.
In recent months, businesses in Harrogate and Knaresborough have been facing untold misery and nightmares resulting from continued, disruptive roadworks. These roadworks have negatively impacted people commuting around Harrogate and Knaresborough – significantly those visiting the constituency. This has caused a detrimental impact on the local economy of Harrogate and Knaresborough.
With large scale developments on the horizon – including more housing on the west side of Harrogate, and the Station Gateway developments in the town centre – Tom is backing this amendment, as to mitigate the disruption caused by road closures, so that local businesses are able to keep their heads above the waterline.
Commenting, Tom said:
“Constant roadworks have blighted our constituency for too long. Whilst it is important that our roads are looked after, and that infrastructure is renewed and replaced, this needs to be done in balance to the interests of local businesses and stakeholders.
“I have had several messages from concerned business owners in Harrogate and Knaresborough, regarding continued roadworks and developments that prevent trade and business. We must support small local businesses – the backbone of our local economy.
“I’m glad to be able to bring attention to local issues to Parliament, and contribute towards proposed legislation, as to reassure and protect local businesses in Harrogate and Knaresborough.”
