Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has spoken in Parliament about the
need for a pragmatic approach to school term-time holidays, highlighting the educational
importance of allowing children to attend the Great Yorkshire Show.

Many local families have expressed their disappointment that children can no longer take
time off school to experience the show, which offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn
about farming, food production, and the careers that sustain our food system.

“The Great Yorkshire Show is more than just a day out – it’s an incredible educational
experience,” said Tom Gordon. “It gives young people the chance to understand where their
food comes from, see farming in action, and explore a wide range of careers in agriculture
and food production. It’s disappointing that children are missing out on such opportunities
simply because of rigid school holiday rules.”

Tom Gordon called on the Government and local schools to consider a pragmatic approach
that allows pupils to attend the show while maintaining their education, ensuring young
people in Yorkshire can benefit from this world-class agricultural event.

Fellow Yorkshire MP Robbie Moore has also expressed support for reviewing the rules,
agreeing that local children should not miss out on this unique learning experience.
