Local MP celebrates success of Knaresborough Medieval Day
Over the weekend, Tom Gordon attended Knaresborough Medieval Day, hosted by Knaresborough Mayor, Margy Longhurst. The event showcased Knaresborough’s long and storied history, and particularly highlighted its role as a place of pilgrimage in its early history. It raised money for the Mayor’s chosen charities, The Knaresborough Museum Association and The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag.
Historic pastimes on display included spinning yarn and writing. There were also regular talks throughout the day, as well as tours down to the town’s Marian Shrine. The event was held in Knaresborough House, where Knaresborough Town Council meets.
Knaresborough has a long and varied history, and is included in the Domesday book. The town has had a market since at least the 13th century, with an official charter granted in 1310. The market is still held every Wednesday, although it has recently come under threat as North Yorkshire Council try to cut costs. Tom Gordon has spoken out against the proposed changes, and is supportive of a plan for Knaresborough Town Council to take on the market.

“Knaresborough’s history is fascinating. I’m honoured to represent the town in Parliament. It was also great to see the proud Yorkshire flag flying around the town, another reminder of our long and proud history.”
