Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has warned that village schools are being pushed to breaking point and called on the Government to deliver a fairer funding model that reflects the real costs of rural education.

Speaking in a debate, Tom highlighted the stark reality facing schools in rural parts of his constituency. Many are struggling to afford even the most basic essentials, with some forced to rely on PTAs and community fundraising just to provide activities and maintain a broad curriculum.

He stressed that the crisis extends beyond missing equipment, with several village schools operating in buildings that are no longer fit for purpose. During his visits, Tom has seen classrooms originally intended as temporary structures now being used permanently, despite falling far short of modern teaching standards. This chronic lack of investment in infrastructure is leaving children to learn in conditions that are wholly inadequate.

Tom underscored the urgent need for the Government to introduce a fair and sustainable funding model for village schools. He condemned the current situation as unacceptable, where schools are left so underfunded that they must depend on fundraising and external contributions just to meet basic needs.

Commenting, Tom said:

‘Many village schools are facing a shocking reality: funding is so limited they cannot afford the basics. Schools should never have to rely on outside sources to provide what every child deserves.'

‘Every child, no matter where they live, should have access to a high-quality education in safe, well-equipped schools.'

‘The Government must deliver a fair and sustainable funding model for village schools to end this inequality – and I will keep up the pressure until that happens.’
