Local MP to Host Bake Sale to Celebrate Yorkshire Cancer Research’s 100th Anniversary

Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, will be hosting a community bake sale on Wednesday 13th August, from 12–2pm at Christ Church, Harrogate, to mark the 100th anniversary of Yorkshire Cancer Research and raise funds to support their work.
The event is part of the charity’s Big Birthday Brew campaign, which invites people across the region to host tea parties during Afternoon Tea Week (11–17 August) in support of Yorkshire Cancer Research. Every donation supports life-saving research that is helping to improve early diagnosis and treatment for people living with cancer in Yorkshire and beyond.
Tom has long supported the work of Yorkshire Cancer Research and was keen to take part in their centenary celebrations. He’s encouraging local residents to attend the bake sale, contribute if they can, and learn more about the important work the charity is doing in the region.
Since being elected, Tom has worked closely with the charity – including visiting their Harrogate headquarters, submitting a motion in Parliament to recognise their national impact, and chairing the launch of their recent report addressing cancer inequalities and funding disparities in Yorkshire.
Following the launch of the report, Tom requested a meeting with the Department of Health and Social Care to ensure Yorkshire Cancer Research’s findings help shape the development of the National Cancer Plan. He is scheduled to meet with Minister Dalton, who is leading the plan’s development, when Parliament returns in September.
Commenting, Tom said:
‘Yorkshire has some of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in England – and that must change. Yorkshire Cancer Research is at the forefront of tackling these challenges through cutting-edge research, earlier diagnoses, and improving access to care.
‘For 100 years, the charity has made a real and lasting difference to people’s lives across our region. I’m proud to support their work – both in Parliament and in our local community.
‘This bake sale is a brilliant way to support their mission, bring people together, and celebrate 100 years of life-saving progress. I’d encourage everyone to come along, learn more, and help raise vital funds!’
