Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Tom Gordon joined his Liberal Democrat colleagues in
Parliament today to lead the fight against Nigel Farage’s Bill, which sought to withdraw the
UK from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

While the Labour frontbench abstained on the vote, Conservative MPs backed the Bill
alongside Reform. But with the support of 64 Liberal Democrats and 63 Labour
backbenchers, the motion was defeated – protecting the UK’s human rights framework and
stopping the country from sliding towards what Tom described as “a Trump-style America.”

Commenting, Tom said:

“Today, the Liberal Democrats led the fight to stop Nigel Farage’s dangerous attempt to rip
up people’s rights and pull the UK out of the ECHR.

“While the Labour government sat on its hands and the Conservatives sided with Farage, it
was the Liberal Democrats who stood up for people’s freedoms.

“We will never let the UK become a Trump-style America. Human rights should never be up
for debate – they’re the foundation of a free and fair society, and we’ll fight tooth and nail to
defend them.”
