Tom Gordon MP calls for Government support for grassroots dance – and wishes Knaresborough dancers luck at the Dance World Cup

Tom Gordon, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has today raised the profile of a local dance school in Parliament – urging Government to back grassroots dance and performing arts groups that represent their country on the international stage.
During Business Questions in the House of Commons, Tom praised Freedom Performing Arts, a Knaresborough-based dance school, who are in Spain this week competing at the Dance World Cup. The school has taken 41 dancers and 10 pieces to the international competition, where they are representing England alongside performers from over 60 countries.
Tom asked the Leader of the House for a debate in Government time on support for grassroots dance and performance groups, highlighting the school’s success in raising £30,000 from local sponsors – but noting the team still faces a £9,000 funding gap.
Speaking after his question in Parliament, Tom Gordon MP said:
“Freedom Performing Arts are doing Knaresborough, and the whole country, proud by representing England on the world stage. Their story is a testament to the incredible talent, dedication and community spirit we have in our area.
But it shouldn’t be this difficult for young dancers to reach international competitions. That’s why I’ve asked for a debate in Parliament to look at what more the Government can do to support grassroots groups like Freedom Performing Arts, who bring so much benefit to young people, local communities, and our country.
I also want to wish the team, and every single dancer the very best of luck, we’re all cheering you on back home!”
The team is currently competing in Burgos, Spain, until 12th July.
