Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has championed the work of The Jordan Legacy, a Harrogate-based mental health charity, and called on the Government to provide greater support for organisations tackling suicide prevention.

Speaking during a parliamentary debate on reducing the stigma around suicide, Tom highlighted the vital work of his constituent, Steve Phillip, who founded the Jordan Legacy after losing his son to suicide. The charity works to prevent suicide and engages with schools, universities, employers, and community groups – locally in Harrogate, across North Yorkshire, and nationally.

Tom emphasised the crucial role charities like The Jordan Legacy play in saving lives, breaking down stigma, and encouraging open conversations about mental health. He called for increased funding and resources so these organisations can continue their life-saving
work and reach more people in need.

The debate coincided with International Men’s Day, a timely reminder of the need to address men’s mental health.

Commenting, Tom said:

‘Every year, thousands of lives are lost to suicide and for two decades, those numbers haven’t fallen. That is an unacceptable reality.

‘Charities like The Jordan Legacy are doing incredible work to change that: supporting people, starting conversations, and preventing tragedy.

‘But they shouldn’t have to do it alone. The Government must step up and give these charities the resources and support they need to reach more people and save more lives.’
