Tom Gordon, the Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, praised Harrogate Business Improvement District’s (BID) recent appointment of former police officer Paul Evans to its new Business Crime Officer role during a Westminster debate this week.

Mr Evans’ appointment to the position was referenced by Mr Gordon in a discussion on tackling abuse against people in customer-facing roles.

The role, which targets crime and anti-social behaviour affecting town centre businesses and links businesses, the Council, and the police, was recognised as best practice by the MP during the debate in Parliament.

During the debate Tom Gordon and Home Office Minister Sarah Jones talked about anti-social behaviour and in particular the recent spate of shop workers being filmed for clickbait content.

The two shared concerns around social media fuelling anti-social behaviour, acting as a platform for footage of harassment and even encouraging people into more extreme criminal acts.

Tom said: “No-one should feel unsafe shopping or working on our high street. Paul’s 30 years of experience as a police officer will be invaluable to the community.

“This is a positive partnership between the Council, North Yorkshire Police, BID, and local businesses.

“The creation of a Business Crime Officer is a great piece of joined up thinking, connecting and sharing key information between these organisations.”
