Tom Gordon MP Presses Government on Armed Forces Recruitment and Retention

Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has called for greater action to support the recruitment and retention of Armed Forces personnel, raising concerns directly with the new Armed Forces Minister in Parliament.
Drawing on his experience from the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme – which gives MPs first-hand insight into military life – Tom highlighted challenges facing personnel and their families, particularly those stationed overseas.
A key concern raised was the lack of employment opportunities for the partners of Armed Forces personnel based abroad. Many families are unable or unwilling to relocate due to restrictive visa rules and the absence of international agreements allowing partners to work in host countries.
Tom warned that these barriers risk undermining both retention and recruitment in the Armed Forces at a time when strengthening the UK's defence capability is more important than ever.
He has urged the Government to take concrete steps to support military families stationed overseas and to ensure the Armed Forces remain an attractive and sustainable career choice.
Commenting, Tom said:
‘If we're serious about strengthening the Armed Forces, we must also support the families who serve alongside them – particularly those posted overseas.
‘Many partners face visa restrictions and limited job opportunities abroad, forcing families into difficult choices.
‘These challenges risk driving people away from serving or staying in the forces. The Government must act now to remove these barriers and provide the support our service members and their loved ones deserve.’
