Tom Gordon MP Pushes for Yorkshire to Take Control of Its Future
Yorkshire’s only Liberal Democrat MP, Tom Gordon, will speak in Parliament today in support
of his amendment to the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill, which would
give Yorkshire real control over its future.
The amendment would hand Yorkshire authority over transport, education, health, and
housing – powers essential to reversing decades of neglect and chronic underinvestment
that have held the region back.
Speaking on his amendment later today, Tom will make the case that Westminster’s one-
size-fits-all approach has failed Yorkshire. The region still lacks a modern mass transit
system, suffers from skills and education policies designed in London, and faces health
outcomes well below the national average – all while decisions remain in the hands of
distant policymakers.
Tom’s amendment seeks to change that by putting decision-making in the hands of local
leaders and communities who understand their needs best. The proposal has already
attracted cross-party support, and Tom is determined to secure the backing needed to bring
it to a vote.
Commenting, Tom said:
‘Yorkshire’s economy rivals Wales, its population matches Scotland’s, and its identity runs
deep. Yet Westminster has held us back for decades, funnelling investment into the South
while ignoring our potential.
‘This amendment is about changing that. It gives Yorkshire real powers over key areas, so
decisions reflect local priorities rather than London’s assumptions.
‘If Westminster won’t back our future, it should step aside and let us take charge. Our
potential is there to be unlocked, and I’m determined to make it happen.’
