Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has urged the Government to expand a pioneering one-stop-shop diabetes service into community settings as part of its 10-year NHS plan.

This call follows his visit to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital in his role as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Diabetes, where he saw the service in action and spoke with clinicians, staff, and patients.

The award-winning programme enables patients to complete all nine essential diabetes checks in a single visit, improving early detection, reducing missed appointments, and making care more accessible. It has been nationally recognised for improving outcomes and tackling health inequalities.

In Parliament, Tom highlighted the opportunity to expand this model into settings like grassroots sports clubs, aligning with plans for neighbourhood health hubs.

He welcomed the Minister’s positive response and will continue pushing for accessible, community-based care that helps people with diabetes live healthier lives.

Commenting, Tom said:

‘The one-stop shop diabetes service at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital is a strong example of how modern, joined-up care can truly transform lives.

‘Rolling this model out into local communities, including through grassroots sports clubs, would make vital care more accessible and supports the Government’s vision for neighbourhood health hubs.

‘As Chair of the APPG for Diabetes, I’ll continue to push for national rollout so more people can benefit from this life-changing service.’
