‘Words on Paper Are Not Enough’: Local MP Calls for Real Support for Veterans
Tom Gordon, Liberal Democrat MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, has called for urgent
action to improve support for veterans, particularly in accessing housing, warning that the
Government is failing to deliver on the promises of the Armed Forces Covenant.
Tom raised concerns after being contacted by a former soldier in his constituency who has
struggled for years to find suitable housing. Living with PTSD and night terrors, he has been
unable to have his two children stay with him, and the situation has had a profound impact
on his mental health and family life.
Tom said cases like this highlight the gap between the government’s promises and the reality
for veterans, with the Armed Forces Covenant too often falling short. He stressed that words
on paper are meaningless without action and urged the government to provide real support
so no veteran is left to struggle alone.
Commenting, Tom said:
‘Our veterans have given so much in service to our country, yet far too often they are left
without the support they deserve once that service ends.
‘The Armed Forces Covenant is supposed to protect those who have served, but in reality it
is failing – especially when it comes to housing.
‘Words on paper mean nothing without action. The Government must step up and provide
real, practical support so no veteran is left to struggle alone.’
