Young people from across Harrogate and Knaresborough came together last night for
Discover Democracy – an interactive event hosted by Tom Gordon as part of UK Parliament
Week.

The session gave young people the chance to learn more about how Parliament works, how
decisions are made, and the different ways they can get involved and make their voices
heard. Tom was also joined by Harrogate Town Councillor Josie Thompson, who provided an
insight into how local government operates and how it affects day-to-day life.

A lively Q&A followed, with young people asking questions about life in Parliament and
raising the issues that matter most to them. The evening ended with a Parliament-themed
quiz, giving everyone the chance to test their knowledge of politics and history.

By hosting Discover Democracy, Tom aimed to make politics feel more accessible and show
young people that they can play an active role in shaping their communities.

Commenting after the event, Tom said:

‘When I was growing up, politics often felt distant, and I want to make sure young people in
Harrogate and Knaresborough don’t feel the same way.

‘It was fantastic to host Discover Democracy last night and to see so many young people
getting involved, asking thoughtful questions, and discussing issues that matter to them.

‘I hope the event encouraged more young people to speak up and feel confident about
playing an active role in shaping their communities. And if anyone wants to learn more or
has questions, I’d be very happy for them to get in touch.’
